Jocelyne Cujoh

Jocelyne Cujoh

Jolyne Cujoh (空 条 徐 伦, Kūjō Jorīn) is the protagonist of Part VI: Stone Ocean, as well as the sixth JoJo in the series.
Jolyne is the daughter of Jotaro Kujo, and the only female JoJo to date. Sentenced for a murder she didn't commit, she is sent to the Green Dolphin Street Prison, where she will investigate and confront DIO's closest disciple, the priest Enrico Pucci.
Thanks to an amulet entrusted to her by her father, Jolyne quickly awakens her thread-based Stand, Stone Free.

Apparence

Jolyne is tall and has an athletic look. She has rather long hair, her main cut consists of two buns, surrounded by two braids that meet to form one at the back of her head, her bangs are the same color as these two braids (that is to say light color) and the rest of her hair is a dark color.

Jolyne wears a lot of makeup and a short top and pants with small squares on them. Both her top and pants have a spider web pattern, referring to the power of her Stone Free stand. She has a tattoo representing a butterfly and a dagger on her left arm, this symbol is also present on her top.

Personality

Fickle and rather rough, Jolyne was easily considered a delinquent and a lost cause in her teens. Annoyed by the absence of her father in her life, she tried to get his attention several times by committing several minor crimes and was sent to prison for some of them. Because of Jotaro's absence, it was said that Jolyne was dependent on the affection and approval of others. She will not hesitate to cover up the accident of Romeo, her boyfriend, even if it means being sentenced to 15 years in prison.

After acquiring her Stand and being informed of her father's true love for her, Jolyne seems to mature considerably and becomes more courageous and confident. Rescuing Jotaro, who has fallen into a coma due to a Whitesnake attack, becomes her first priority.

Jolyne maintains her reckless attitude throughout the story. As a former offender living in a maximum security prison, Jolyne has had to toughen up and can be particularly rude. Her rare interactions with her enemies often turn into taunts or death threats, knowing how despicable some of them are. She is also capable of being very aggressive, especially in gaining respect in prison, and even advised F.F. to violently confront an inmate who passed her in a line to buy lunch. Jolyne is particularly violent in her fights; she doesn "t hesitate to use her Stand to hurt her opponents without restraint, by incising their ears and nails for example. She also has a vindictive side, and pays back tenfold any evil committed against her, notably by indirectly cutting Romeo "s tongue for his betrayal. In addition, Jolyne still holds a grudge against Gwess, her first enemy, and doesn't want to do anything with her anymore, despite the latter's efforts to behave well with Jolyne.

Jolyne has incredible determination and maintains it through many fights, which often inspires her companions. After learning of DIO's plan, Jolyne took pride in her lineage and chose to continue her father's efforts to seal the threat that DIO had left behind. Strong, she will withstand the hardships she faces and pursue her goal, regardless of the pain and possible risks. Her determination is so great that she would be willing to lose a limb or even her life to defeat her enemy and save her companions. Even so, Jolyne already expressed doubts about her ability to stop Pucci after the priest's second escape.

Jolyne has a sense of honor, a common trait among the Joestars. She is desperate to do whatever she can to help another person, as when she helped an abused prisoner get her stolen money back. Jolyne sees the good in everyone, which has led to many betrayals but also to the friendship of F.F. She is especially gentle with Emporio, her first real ally on Green Dolphin Street, and despite him being her enemy, she would not kill the Green Baby. Her main motivation for investigating Whitesnake was her love for her father, and Pucci exploited this affection to escape from him the first time.

Outside of combat, Jolyne behaves like a normal young girl, if not a teenager, hanging out with her friends and keeping herself as busy as she can in the prison. Unlike her father, Jolyne is quite outgoing and easily expresses her feelings to others. She is a sociable person who is able to converse with great ease.

Jolyne stands out for being somewhat promiscuous, being the first and only JoJo to admit to masturbating and even nonchalantly stating that the snails' ability to copulate with anything makes her a little jealous. She is still horribly embarrassed to talk about it publicly, however, and being caught in the act by a guard made her deeply ashamed.

Hirohiko Araki, the creator of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, created Jolyne in hopes of "making up" for his previous (and in his eyes, failed) attempt to create a "good protagonist." In addition to providing an interesting contrast, he believes that she is a "real woman," and that this is a trait that is sorely lacking in the shonen scene. The dissimilarity of Jolyne and her father was designed to make her character go beyond the typical archetypes of Japanese fiction.

Capabilities

Stand

Stone Free is a Stand that gives Jolyne the ability to undo almost her entire body in one thread. This makes it a very versatile Stand, allowing her to eavesdrop on a conversation from a distance (like a string phone), as well as to escape and hide by unraveling herself into a long thread.

When she gathers this thread, Jolyne can materialize Stone Free, partially or entirely. Stone Free is a humanoid Stand with stats comparable to the most powerful Stands, with an A in Destruction, Durability, and Potential.

Unlike the rest of her family, Jolyne awakens her Stand by cutting her finger with an amulet (which later turns out to be a fragment of the Arrow) given to her by her father.

Personal Talents

stone ocean jojo
  • Intelligence: One of Jolyne's best assets is her imagination. The versatility of her Stand's power gives her a wide range of techniques that she doesn't hesitate to use. For example, when Pucci used C-Moon to reverse Jolyne's body, she used Stone Free to create a "Mobius Ribbon" on her body, making her invulnerable to this power.

Just like the other Joestars, Jolyne excels at using everything that can be used to her advantage, such as the environment or the power of the enemy. Her quickness allows her to outwit many opponents.

Jolyne combines her strategies with a high level of recklessness, often putting herself in danger to surprise her enemies with an unanticipated attack. The peculiar nature of her ability ensures that she suffers many injuries that no other ordinary Stand wielder would risk in combat.

Despite this, Jolyne's intelligence can sometimes be explained by her intuition, as some of her actions are based on pure luck.

  • Hand-to-hand combat: Jolyne also proves to be capable of defending herself without the aid of her Stand, as demonstrated in her fight against Viviano Westwood. She has a great knowledge of self-defense, which she uses in the course of the story, especially against Pucci.

History

Past

Jolyne Cujoh was born in 1992. Jolyne never saw her father who was often absent because his work often required him to leave the country. Even when he had a high fever, Jotaro could not return to Japan to be with her. At the age of 14, her life as a teenager began to deteriorate when she was falsely accused of a theft she did not commit and fled from an officer by stealing a motorcycle. After being arrested and held in a holding cell, she and her mother plead her innocence and even beg Jotaro to post bail. However, when he did not believe her, she was eventually sent to juvenile detention.

When her mother divorced Jotaro, Jolyne became even more frustrated when he left the family home. She soon joined the biker and thief gang, Hell Riders, and spent more time causing trouble. At 19, after making amends and leaving the gang, she goes out with a rich boy named Romeo Jisso. On their way home, Romeo and Jolyne are in a car accident, with Romeo fatally hitting a pedestrian. Worried that he will be charged with reckless driving and dropped off a college waiting list, Romeo decides to take the body and dump it somewhere, persuading Jolyne to help him and forget the incident. A few days later, however, Jolyne is found in her home and arrested.

Imprisonment

She is sent to prison after a murder case with her boyfriend Romeo. While waiting for her transfer, Jolyne befriends Hermes Costello in prison. She also receives a gift from her mother, a pendant on which she pricks herself and immediately throws away, this pendant is actually a piece of the Arrow. During the transfer, Jolyne awakens her power to unravel strings, but without friends or money, Jolyne finds herself in a precarious position in Green Dolphin Street Prison. At first, it's just sensitive wires that allow her to tie someone up or listen in on conversations, she will actually use these wires to kill her corrupt lawyer. Her Stand will show its true form only during its fight against Goo Goo Dolls, Stand of Gwess, her fellow prisoner who martyred her. Jolyne manages to assemble her strings to form the true Stone Free Stand. She manages to gain the respect of her fellow inmates but still needs a way out of prison.

Visit to Jotaro

One day, Jolyne receives a visitor. Despite the warnings of a mysterious child named Emporio Alniño, Jolyne goes to the visiting room only to find that her father, Jotaro Kujo, is present. Furious, Jolyne tries to leave, but Jotaro warns her that her enemies have tricked her in order to lure her to him. They soon find themselves fighting two Stands, Johngalli A the sniper and the Whitesnake who traps Jolyne and Jotaro in an illusion. Although they both manage to escape, Jotaro's memory and Stand are stolen by Whitesnake. Jotaro's last words, confessing that he cherished his daughter, shake Jolyne. While Jotaro is placed in the care of the Speedwagon Foundation, Jolyne chooses to remain in prison in order to recover her father's memory and Stand, as well as the hidden enemy.

Recovery of the disk from the Jotaro Stand

Hermes Costello, who awakened her own Stand by injuring herself while touching the Arrow and fought Thunder McQueen, retrieved Thunder's memory disk, allowing Jolyne to investigate and find a cache of disks near a farm.

In order to search the farm, Jolyne and Hermes volunteer to search for two missing prisoners near the bogs, but they must fight Foo Fighters, a planktonic Stand, when they find Jotaro's Stand disk. After a long confrontation, Jolyne spares Foo Fighters, considering him to be misguided rather than evil, and Foo Fighters takes back the corpse of the prisoner Atroe to go live with Jolyne's group.

In possession of the Star Platinum disc, Jolyne caught the attention of her enemy Enrico Pucci, who saw her as nothing more than a pawn for his plan. Realizing how dangerous she is, Pucci sends Miraschon to retrieve the stolen disk and kill Jolyne's group. However, Miraschon is defeated by Jolyne and Foo Fighters.

Jolyne's call to the Speedwagon Foundation is intercepted by Pucci, who sends Lang Wrangler to assassinate her. However, one of Emporio's allies, Weather Report, comes to his aid and both kill Lang. Having set up a rendezvous in the backyard, Jolyne manages, despite Whitesnake's best efforts, to deliver the disk to a carrier pigeon. Jolyne gives Jotaro back his Stand, but the latter is still in danger of decomposing without his soul.

Disciplinary ward

Hermes Costello, who voluntarily got himself thrown in jail, sets out to get revenge on Sports Max, a gangster who killed his sister. Unfortunately, Sports Max's Limp Bizkit Stand resurrects him and a battle ensues between Hermes, Jolyne and Foo Fighters, both of whom have come to help him, against Sports Max's army of invisible zombies. Sports Max is quickly defeated, but Hermes is seriously injured while Jolyne is thrown into the disciplinary ward.

Since an examination of Sports Max's memory disk reveals that Whitesnake used it to resurrect a mysterious bone that is now in the disciplinary ward, Jolyne is determined to find that bone. However, Pucci sends four Stand users to kill her, while Foo Fighters enlists Emporio's second ally, Narciso Anasui, to help protect Jolyne. Viviano Westwood, a prison guard driven mad by Stand Survivor, frees all the prisoners and fights Jolyne. Although Westwood is a difficult opponent, Jolyne eventually defeats him.

The third Stand wielder, an old man named Kenzo, confronts Jolyne. However, Foo Fighters comes to the rescue and confronts Kenzo, while Anasui deals him the final blow. During their fight, the bone fused plants from all the normal inmates and created The Green Baby. Deciding to try to escape the prison, Jolyne and Anasui fall a fourth Stand, Yo-Yo Ma, who swallows the baby, thus forcing them to take him away while F.F. stays to kill their enemy. While Jolyne and Anasui try to hide from the guards, Yo-Yo Ma tries to kill them, while F.F. directly confronts Enrico Pucci.

Birth of the Green Baby

Yo-Yo Ma is neutralized when Anasui merges his brain with that of a frog and F.F. manages to kill Yo-Yo Ma's user. Now, Jolyne and Anasui face the hatched Green Baby and although the Green Baby has the power to shrink anyone who approaches it, Jolyne befriends it. Meanwhile, F.F. manages to join Jolyne and Anasui alongside Weather Report, but Weather Report suddenly attacks F.F. and Anasui, knocking them down. Whitesnake then disguises himself as Weather Report and Enrico Pucci confronts Jolyne.

A fight ensues, but Enrico Pucci throws Jotaro's memory disk at the dying Anasui, threatening to destroy it. Jolyne has no choice but to give up the fight and Pucci takes the baby and merges with him. F.F. then sacrifices himself to save Anasui. The escape is an almost total disaster.

Escape from prison

While Enrico Pucci escapes from the prison, Jolyne confronts Miu Miu, the head guard of the prison. Although Miu Miu's Jail House Lock prevents Jolyne from acquiring more than three memories, Emporio and Jolyne manage to work together and force Miu Miu to let the group escape.

Sky High

Emporio, Jolyne and Hermes escape from prison and chase Enrico Pucci across Florida to the coordinates Latitude North 28°4', Longitude West 80°36'.

Jolyne first goes to her ex-boyfriend, Romeo Jisso, who offers her a helicopter to make up for it. But the trio soon crashes when they are attacked by Rikiel, one of DIO's sons. Rikiel, defeated after a hard battle, reveals to them that Weather Report is in fact Enrico's brother.

Under World and Heavy Weather

Jolyne, Hermes and Emporio soon reach the hospital where Pucci is hiding. However, Donatello Versus, the third son of DIO, who answered Pucci's call, intervenes with his Stand Under World. Able to summon memories from the ground, Donatello traps Jolyne and Hermes in a plane crash. However, Jolyne and Hermes manage to escape and defeat Donatello. However, Donatello manages to steal a memory disk and returns it to Pucci's brother, Weather Report.

A strange new event occurs as the streets are invaded by millions of snails and people turn into snails themselves. Despite being infected, Jolyne and Hermes escape from the hospital and force Donatello to drive for them. Jolyne interrupts the fight between Weather Report and Pucci, but the former dies while Pucci escapes.

Cape Canaveral

Jolyne and her companions must now head to Cape Canaveral to stop Pucci. However, gravity suddenly shifts to horizontal and Hermes is swept away by falling debris. Now in the main courtyard of Cape Canaveral, Jolyne fights with the new C-Moon Stand. Although C-Moon's blows are dangerous because they can turn his body inside out, Jolyne gets the upper hand until Pucci intervenes and guides C-Moon to punch his chest. Jolyne appears to die, much to the dismay of her friends.

However, as Jotaro approaches, it is discovered that Jolyne has survived and is resuming her fight. Jotaro arrives thanks to Hermes and stops time. Pucci is injured and surrounded but finds a way to unlock his ultimate power sooner than expected. As he flies away, no one can stop him from unlocking his final Stand and a bright light envelops everyone.

Made in Heaven

Jolyne and her companions wake up and soon discover that time is speeding up, without the living beings being affected. Pucci and his new Stand Made in Heaven prove unable to counterattack and the group attempts to reach the sea but Pucci catches up with them. However, Jotaro, in a critical time stoppage, gains time by trying to save Jolyne from the knives thrown at her and misses Pucci. Pucci then kills Jotaro, Anasui and Hermes while Jolyne is seriously wounded and Emporio is the only one left standing. Pucci approaches Emporio, Jolyne manages to cut his eye before attacking him again to allow Emporio to escape, but their enemy manages to cut her and neutralize her.

Emporio then escaped on the back of a dolphin while time continued to accelerate, he found himself naked in the Green Dolphin Street Prison and found the prisoners who were also naked. Panicking, he looks around and hears Jotaro and Jolyne arguing behind a door, the same scene as when the father had visited his daughter when she was imprisoned. Emporio comes out of the wall through the hole he entered but suddenly sees Pucci enter the room, in the state he was in after Jolyne's attack. Pucci thinks that nobody will be able to stop him and decides to finish with him but Emporio flees. He is then pursued by the guards on order of Pucci who also follows him and, whereas he is about to catch him while the boy introduces himself in the hole of a wall, Pucci gives him a blow of punch to extract a disc of memory, but it is that of Weather which leaves it, which this last had withdrawn before dying and which Jolyne had entrusted to him. Indeed, this disc contains the Stand, Weather Report which attacks Pucci immediately. This last one does not manage to use his Stand to accelerate the time and to escape since he is destabilized by the toxic gas which emits the Stand of his twin. Paralyzed and on the ground, Pucci is at the mercy of Emporio who finally crushes his head by rushing him.

What A Wonderful World

After Pucci's death, the world is reset and Emporio finds his friends in an alternative world with different identities. Jolyne is now called Irene who is dating Annakiss, who go to Jotaro's house to ask Annakiss for her daughter's hand in marriage.

Anecdotes

  • Araki says that making an arc with Jojo as a girl was a real challenge for him, he had to go beyond the clichés and Jolyne had to be able to take hits, bleed and fight even if her enemy is a man.
  • Jolyne, Fly High with GUCCI is Hirohiko Araki's second one-shot for the fashion magazine Spur, this time featuring Jolyne.
