Hinata

An orphan exiled from the dead planet Vegeta, he lands on Earth where he grows up with his adoptive grandfather. His adventure begins the day he meets Bulma, a young adventurer, who invites him to search for the Dragon Balls...

Origins and creation

His name, Son Goku, is directly taken from the Japanese transcription of Sun Wukong, the hero of the classic novel of Chinese literature The Wanderings of the West, dating from the 16th century, very popular in Japan. Akira Toriyama keeps several elements of it, such as Nyoi-bô, the monkey tail, or Kinto-Un. It means in Chinese "Grandson of the monkey(s) of the heavens".

His Saiyan name is Kakarotto, a derivative of carrot, which means "carrot" in English. Like all other Saiyans, he has a name that refers to a vegetable.

Characteristics and personality

Son Gokû

He has spiky black hair that never changes throughout the story, because Saiyans' hair doesn't grow. He has a tail because of his Saiyan origin, but he had it cut off by Puerh, when he was transformed into a Giant Monkey. It grew back during the saga of the 21st Tenka Ichi Budôkai, before being torn off by Son Gohan during the saga of Baba the seer. It will grow again before the 22nd Tenka Ichi Budôkai saga, before being removed permanently before the 23rd Tenka Ichi Budôkai saga. His tail comes back in Dragon Ball GT, allowing him to transform into a Golden Giant Monkey and Super Saiyan 4.

He is most often seen wearing a yellow-orange dogi, with blue wrists and black belt. The symbol on his outfit differs, depending on his different masters: "亀", Kame, for Kamé Sennin, "神", Kami, for God, "界", Kai and "王", Ō, superimposed for Master Kaiô and then an additional symbol, the symbol "悟", Go, present in his name, which he wears during the sagas of Namek, Freezer, Beerus, Trunks of the Future, and Survival of the Universe. After the saga of Piccolo Daimaô, as well as the signature of Whis during the saga of the Resurrection of Freezer. He adds a blue under, changes his belt to blue, and now has blue and red boots with a lace. During the 7 Dragon Balls, Artificial Humans, Cell, and Majin Boo sagas, no symbol appears.

At times, Goku was seen wearing different clothes, such as a gray tuxedo and a tie in the eighth movie. In the last nine days before the Cell Game, he wears sportswear including an orange and black long-sleeved jacket with the number "59" (which reads "go-ku" in Japanese), a white undershirt, lime green pants, and brown boots.

At the end of the original story, and in Dragon Ball GT, Goku wears a blue gi with ochre pants. He also has a white scarf that goes above his waist and pink sports cuffs. He wears black shoes with white shin covers. In Super Saiyan 4, he loses his gi top and bracelets, and his shin covers turn blue.

Son Gokû

Son Goku is known for his good mood, his enthusiasm, his love of competition and his great naivety, even as an adult. He has a remarkable intuition to feel the good in others, despite their actions, although his ability to forgive his enemies has sometimes been criticized as excessive. He comes across as a very naive character, who only grew up with his adoptive grandfather and is initially unaware of many of the codes of society. As a child and even as a teenager, he doesn't know the difference between girls and boys at first sight. His pure heart also allows him to ride the Kinto-Un. As he grows up, he loses his naivety, but the candid air that made him an extremely endearing character remains, though to a lesser extent.

He is always eager to meet opponents, especially when they are powerful and seem unbeatable. Goku is always ready to take up a challenge. Nevertheless, he knows how to admit defeat and is able to train hard as well as rest.

As he evolves, he becomes more and more powerful thanks to his rigorous training, but also because of his affiliation with the Saiyanne race, which becomes more powerful every time it comes close to death. On the family level, he is a very gentle person, he loves his friends above all and lives only to protect them. His wife Chichi often reproaches him for having fun rather than giving priority to his son's schooling, who will eventually become a scientist. His incredible power is both controlled and reinforced by his fierce loyalty and morality. Despite his good heart, Son Goku can feel anger in times of extreme turbulence, such as the death of a close friend or relative.

 Son Gokû

His pure and naive character also comes out in his fights, he does not always hate his enemies and often believes that they are capable of changing their behavior. For example, he chose to spare Piccolo and Vegeta, who ended up joining the group. However, this kindness has played tricks on him, for example during his fight against Raditz or Freezer, who are not close to be on Goku's side. On the other hand, when his opponents, like Freezer, go too far in the cruelty, Gokû loses his calm and the rage invades him. When he has no choice, he would not hesitate to kill his opponents, mainly the major enemies of the series like Freezer or Majin Boo (bad).

However, in Dragon Ball Super, Son Goku's personality changes greatly, probably to attract a younger audience. We come back to a much more carefree and irresponsible hero, since he is the investigator of the tournament of the strongest. The hero is also much less serious except in extremely difficult situations.

Nevertheless, there are some poignant scenes, especially when Zamasu tells his enemy that he killed Chichi and Son Goten coldly.

Throughout the story, Son Goku, during his adventures, learns many techniques. He has the ability to assimilate the fighting techniques of his opponents with an unequalled ease and speed. Thus, when he sees Kame Sennin using the Kame Hamé Ha attack, he manages, to the great surprise of his companions, to reproduce it on the first try.

Here are mentioned only techniques which are explicitly used in the manga and whose names are given or deduced. As for the rest of the article, the dominant names are as much as possible those given in the French translation of the manga (still in progress).
